Conservation of forests is a major imperative for us since we use plenty of timber (not least in our mainstay products of notebooks and office furniture). Over the years, we have worked to conserve biodiversity and reduce our use of hazardous materials in order to minimize our impact on the environment.
From this year, we’ll monitor and take steps to improve our impact on the environment so that we can balance business activities with natural capital for a healthier planet.

Materiality Taskforce Activity
A taskforce was launched to lead efforts to achieve a challenge goal for FY2030: Carbon footprint of business activities visualized and carbon neutrality achieved. Guided by the TNFD framework, we will monitor our current impact on nature, visualize the data, and establish a plan to achieve nature-positive outcomes.
Yui-no-Mori Project
We thinned 88.55 hectares of forest in FY2021. The amount of CO2 absorbed was 5,368 t-CO2.
In 2006, we launched a project to conserve a public forest in the Taisho district of Shimanto, Kochi Prefecture, which we named Yui-no-Mori (“linkage forest”). In this project, we thin the forest and make effective use of the resulting timber. Our purpose is to lead the way in reviving manmade forests and restoring the link between the natural environment and local livelihoods. In 2007, the project earned FSC® certification. In addition, we have been receiving CO2 absorption certificates from Kochi Prefecture since 2007. We will continue to promote appropriate management and maintenance of forest resources through our business as a company that utilizes many wood materials to do business. (FSC®COO4748) (FSC COO7763)
ReEDEN Project
We suspended some reed trimming activities due to the impact of COVID-19 in FY2021. Therefore, we only trimmed 0.45 hectares of reedbed.
In 2007, KOKUYO Product Shiga Co., Ltd., launched a project for conserving Lake Biwa’s ecosystem that combines activism with utilization. The reeds of Lake Biwa play an essential role. They provide an aquatic habitat, support biodiversity, and absorb CO2. However, with the decline of such traditional industries, the reedbeds are no longer maintained so well and only half remains. In 1992, Shiga Prefecture passed an ordinance to address the problem by conserving, cultivating, and using the reeds. We will protect the abundant Lake Biwa environment by putting these ordinances into practice in our business activities. That will also contribute to mitigating climate change.
Promote Timber Legality Compliance
The results of the annual survey (2021) based on the Timber Legality Certification Due Diligence System Manual (Furniture Edition) formulated in 2019, confirmed the legality of all the wood surveyed. In 2011, we released a groupwide policy on timber procurement to enshrine our commitment to sustainable use of forest resources. Since our foundation, timber has served as an important resource in our products, such as paper. Recognizing the vital role forests play in mitigating global warming and supporting biodiversity, we aim to promote harmony with forests by ensuring that our timber procurement is legal, transparent, and sustainable.
